In recent years, centers offering laser hair removal treatments performed by poorly qualified staff at very low prices have emerged. This trend is harming a highly effective technique because, to offer such low rates, they use equipment that is minimally effective—or even counterproductive—since laser hair removal requires adjusting the light beam parameters to the hair type (black, brown, blonde, etc.) and skin type (phototype) primarily.
The parameters we must set based on the patient’s characteristics to heat and destroy the hair are wavelength (nm), dose (J/cm²), and duration (ms). If not done properly, instead of hair destruction, we might trigger a ‘paradoxical effect,’ widely documented in medical literature, where dormant hairs are stimulated and begin to grow.
The scientific basis for photodynamic therapy, laser hair removal, and varicose vein coagulation treatments using a light beam is Selective Photothermolysis. This means different body structures react to specific wavelengths and take varying amounts of time to reach temperatures that enable coagulation, denaturation, or destruction of that structure without damaging surrounding tissues.
A increasingly common issue is that the lasers used in these centers require excessive time to find the right dose, causing the heat concentrated in the hair to dissipate and begin burning surrounding structures, such as the skin.
Another critical aspect of laser hair removal is scheduling session intervals based on the hair growth phases in different body areas. Just as it makes no sense to shave every three hours, it’s equally illogical to schedule facial laser hair removal sessions before three or four weeks, or before six to eight weeks for the rest of the body, except in specific cases.
It’s also vital that centers performing laser hair removal prioritize patient eye protection, using protective goggles that effectively and safely shield the eyes. Otherwise, various eye damages can occur (eye pain, vision loss, red eyes, or injury to the iris and retina, among others).
