Spots: Unwanted pigmentation
What are skin spots?
Spots are pigmentation irregularities in the skin that can vary in size, color, and intensity.
Spots can appear due to excessive sun exposure, environmental pollution, dietary habits, stress, and the consumption of alcohol and tobacco. Other causes include pregnancy, estrogen level fluctuations, and thyroid disorders.
The skin is the largest organ of our body, providing protection and playing a key role in each individual's physical appearance. Skin spots affect women significantly more than men. By the age of 40, 90% of women develop their first marks.
The skin is one of the main indicators of aging. Over time, areas such as the face, neck, décolletage, and hands develop spots that add years to our appearance, leaving the skin looking worn and aged.
Types of skin spots
Freckles
Sun exposure spots
Sunspots or solar lentigines are darkened areas of the skin caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays. They most commonly appear on the face, hands, and décolletage, affecting both men and women.
Aging spots
Also known as senile spots or lentigines, these dark marks appear with age due to the skin’s reduced regenerative capacity and the accumulation of sun damage over time. They are commonly found on the hands, face, and arms.
Hormonal spots or melasma
Also known as melasma, these pigmentation changes in the skin are caused by hormonal imbalances, such as those occurring during pregnancy or due to contraceptive use. These spots typically appear in sun-exposed areas, like the face, and are characterized by a brown or grayish tone. While they do not pose a serious medical issue, they can affect aesthetics and self-esteem, making treatment essential for many individuals. Melasma, also referred to as chloasma or the "pregnancy mask," is a skin condition characterized by dark brown patches (hypermelanosis) that usually appear in sun-exposed areas. The most common causes include genetic predisposition, exposure to ultraviolet and solar radiation, contraceptive use, pregnancy, certain medications, and unsuitable cosmetic products.
Since melasma is a complex and difficult-to-manage condition, the best approach is prevention by avoiding direct sun or artificial light exposure on the skin and using high-quality sunscreens or protective barriers.
The treatments are performed according to the severity of the condition and range from compounded creams and peels to the latest technologies available at Cali Laser Center: Alma Hybrid, Endymed, ND-YAG lasers, Q-Switched lasers, and intense pulsed light from the Harmony XL Pro platform, as well as the Hollywood Peel and other chemical peels.
At Cali Laser Center, we have state-of-the-art technology for spot removal, addressing various types of hyperpigmentation with effective and safe treatments.
Alma Hybrid: the most advanced combination for skin spot removal
Alma Hybrid is our most innovative and powerful technology for treating skin spots. This system combines fractional CO₂ laser and non-ablative laser, achieving deep skin renewal without long recovery times. Its action stimulates collagen production and regenerates the skin, effectively eliminating sunspots, melasma, and post-inflammatory pigmentation. Thanks to its versatility, it allows for a customized treatment based on the type and depth of the spot, delivering visible results in fewer sessions.
Additionally, Alma Hybrid allows for the combination of different laser technologies in a single treatment, enhancing the effectiveness of spot removal and improving overall skin texture. This level of customization makes it possible to tailor the treatment to each patient’s specific needs, ensuring optimal results and a more comfortable experience.
Other complementary technologies for skin spot removal
In addition to the Alma Hybrid, at Cali Laser Center, we use other advanced technologies based on each patient’s needs:
🔹 Harmony XL Pro: This versatile, state-of-the-art laser platform is designed to treat a wide range of skin spots and pigmentation issues. Its advanced technology provides customized solutions for different types of hyperpigmentation, resulting in a more even and radiant complexion. Harmony XL Pro is an advanced technology that utilizes pulsed light and fractional laser to treat various types of skin spots, including hormonal, sun-induced, age-related spots, and freckles. Its precision targets accumulated melanin directly, effectively eliminating spots without damaging the surrounding skin. This non-invasive treatment stimulates skin regeneration, leaving the skin smoother, more radiant, and free of imperfections.
🔹 Endymed and Fractional CO₂ Laser: These treatments work to rejuvenate and depigment the skin. The fractional CO₂ laser exfoliates the skin’s surface layers, while Endymed uses radiofrequency to improve skin texture and stimulate cellular regeneration.
🔹 Hollywood Peel with Alma-Q and Picosecond Technology: This option is ideal for superficial spots, uneven skin tone, and dull skin. The Alma-Q is a high-power Q-Switched laser designed to treat hyperpigmentation with maximum precision and safety. Its advanced technology delivers energy pulses in nanoseconds and picoseconds, breaking down pigment into tiny particles that the body naturally eliminates. The Hollywood Peel, performed with Alma-Q, utilizes activated carbon laser, which adheres to impurities and dead skin cells on the skin’s surface. When the laser is applied, the carbon vaporizes, providing a deep exfoliation that reduces spots, minimizes pores, and delivers an immediate glow.
Additionally, picosecond technology targets deeper and more resistant spots, achieving a more even skin tone without causing thermal damage to the surrounding tissues.
🔹 Chemical peels: We use specialized formulas to rejuvenate the skin and reduce spots, melasma, and dyschromia. These treatments exfoliate the skin at different levels, promoting cellular regeneration and improving its overall appearance.
Regardless of the type of spot, at Cali Laser Center, we perform a personalized diagnosis to determine the most suitable treatment and achieve a more even, radiant, and spot-free complexion.

Frequently asked questions
In general, if proper care is taken after treatment, the spots will not reappear. Results are most effective and long-lasting for spots caused by sun exposure and aging. Spots caused by genetic and hormonal factors also respond well, but they require more diligent post-treatment care.
This procedure may cause redness and superficial scabbing that lasts for a few days. While it may create some social limitations, it does not restrict physical activities. You can go about your daily routine but should avoid direct sun exposure for at least a week. Swimming pools, steam rooms, and saunas should also be avoided for the first eight days after treatment. Patients must apply a moisturizing and healing cream daily, along with the prescribed sunscreen. Do not attempt to remove scabs that have not fallen off naturally. Additionally, makeup should not be used during the first four days of the post-treatment period.
Ideally, proper skin care includes daily sunscreen use and sun avoidance. These precautions are enough to maintain optimal results. However, if you expose your skin to the sun, the chances of the spots reappearing are very high.
The results depend on the type of spot, the individual's skin tone, and the depth of the pigment. However, in general, patients experience very satisfactory outcomes. In most cases, around 80% of the spots can be successfully removed.
