If you have fine lines or wrinkles around your eyes, mouth, or forehead, shallow acne scars, or skin that has not responded well to a facial cleansing, you may be a good candidate for the treatment. However, if you have active acne or very dark skin, you may not be eligible. This technique is also not recommended for stretch marks. It is essential to consult with a doctor or dermatology specialist to determine whether this treatment is suitable for you before undergoing any procedure of this kind.
The two most commonly used lasers for skin rejuvenation are carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium YAG. Each laser works by vaporizing damaged skin cells at the surface level.
This method has been used for years to treat various skin concerns, including wrinkles, scars, warts, enlarged oil glands on the nose, and other conditions. The latest version of the CO2 laser for rejuvenation (fractional CO2) uses very short pulses of light energy (also known as ultra-pulsed) or continuous light beams delivered in a scanning pattern to remove thin layers of damaged skin with minimal heat exposure. Recovery can take up to two weeks.
Start by consulting a plastic surgeon or dermatologist to determine if you are a good candidate. Be sure to choose a doctor with documented training and experience in skin treatments. The doctor will determine the best laser treatment for you after considering your medical history, current health, and desired results. Inform your doctor if you have cold sores or fever blisters around your mouth, as skin rejuvenation treatment may trigger outbreaks in some people. If you decide to undergo the procedure, your doctor may advise you to avoid medications or supplements that affect blood clotting, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or vitamin E, for about 10 days before the treatment. If you smoke, you should stop at least two weeks before and after the procedure, as smoking can slow the skin’s healing process. Your doctor may also prescribe an antibiotic to prevent bacterial infections and an antiviral medication if you are prone to cold sores or fever blisters.
