From 50% to 90% of pregnant women develop stretch marks. Of course, pregnancy isn’t the only cause, and this isn’t just a women’s issue—men experience stretch marks too.
Understanding Stretch Marks
Stretch marks result from the breaking of the skin’s elastic fibers. When the skin stretches, less elastic fibers rupture, creating marks we call stretch marks. Initially, they appear pink, then reddish, and finally white. Stretch marks are essentially a reflection of the skin’s separation. Stretching skin doesn’t hurt, though it may sometimes cause a mild burning sensation or pulsing. They’re most common on the abdomen but also appear on the thighs, buttocks, hips, chest, and arms.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
The causes of stretch marks vary—they can stem from pregnancy, muscle development, or weight gain. The skin stretches to accommodate increased body volume. Skin is highly elastic and can handle significant stretching over a short period, but it has a limit. When that limit is reached, the deeper layers of the skin tear. This tear becomes visible on the outer layers, resulting in what we know as stretch marks. Loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin leads to stretch marks, expression lines, loss of skin tone, and wrinkles. When elasticity and collagen diminish or the skin is overstretched, stretch marks appear.
Common Causes
Sudden Weight Changes: Rapid weight gain forces the skin to adapt, which is why stretch marks are so common during pregnancy.
Hormonal Changes: The most common case is during puberty when girls’ breasts begin to grow.
Genetics: This is the most frequent cause—our genetic predisposition. Of course, it needs to combine with another factor to manifest, so if your sister has stretch marks, take extra care.
Overall Skin Health: Dry skin paired with a poor diet lacking essential nutrients makes the skin more prone to developing stretch marks.
Ethnicity: People of African descent tend to have fewer stretch marks.
Rapid Muscle Growth: This is common among bodybuilders. Muscles grow large and fast, causing the skin to tear and form stretch marks.
Can They Be Prevented?
Most dermatologists agree that stretch marks can’t be prevented when skin stretching occurs, such as during pregnancy. However, they can be eliminated.
Laser Treatments
Specialist doctors and dermatologists assert that laser treatment is the best solution for eliminating stretch marks. Lasers work by stimulating collagen production in the skin. The treatments are short, painless, and leave no scars. The laser penetrates the skin, and the heat it generates in the deeper layers boosts elasticity. The result is smoother, more even skin. Stretch marks can improve with a single treatment, but typically 4 to 6 sessions are needed for complete removal.
